Set Up AirPods Live Translation Before You Need It Away From Home
Download both languages before relying on AirPods Live Translation for a conversation. Apple requires the language the other person speaks and the language you want to hear. Once those models are downloaded, Apple says the processing happens on your iPhone and the conversation data stays there.

This guide follows Apple’s current setup instructions. It concerns an in-person conversation, including how to reply when the other person has no compatible AirPods. You can check the arrangement at home rather than discover a missing requirement while trying to ask a question abroad.
Check the phone and headphones together
Apple lists AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, both AirPods 5 models, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2. The iPhone must be an iPhone 15 Pro or later, running iOS 26 or later, with Apple Intelligence turned on. You also need Apple’s Translate app and the latest AirPods firmware.
Availability depends on region and language. Check Apple’s Live Translation availability information for your intended conversation. A supported pair of headphones alone does not establish that your phone and language combination can use the feature.
Download the languages, then choose the conversation
- Put the AirPods in your ears and connect them to the iPhone.
- Open Settings and tap the name of your AirPods.
- Tap Live Translation (Beta).
- Select the languages you want to download. Include both sides of the conversation; Spanish-to-English translation needs Spanish and English.
- Open Apple’s Translate app and tap Live.
- Select the language the other person is speaking and the language you want the AirPods to translate it into.
- Tap Start Translation to begin listening.
The expected result is translated speech in your AirPods as the other person talks. Check that the selected direction matches the conversation. Downloading a language makes it available; selecting the source and destination tells the session what to do with it.
Plan how the other person will hear your answer
Speak your response naturally. In the Live tab, you can show the other person the translated transcript, or press Play to send the translation through the iPhone speaker. They do not need AirPods to use those two reply options.
If they also have supported AirPods, they must set up and start Live Translation on their own arrangement to hear your response through their headphones. Merely standing next to your connected iPhone does not complete their setup. Tap X when you want to end the session.
If the conversation is not coming through clearly
Work back through the prerequisites: connected AirPods, Apple Intelligence enabled, the Translate app, current firmware and downloaded languages. In noise, Apple suggests bringing your iPhone closer to the speaker so its microphones can help the AirPods capture speech.
A sound adjustment is a separate control. Our AirPods Custom EQ guide explains how that preference follows the headphones; changing EQ does not download translation models or select a language.
Apple warns that generated translations can be inaccurate. Confirm important details with the other person, especially a name, time or instruction on which you are about to act. A fluent-sounding translation is still something to check.
